Sim racing keeps on moving toward higher-end accessories, while there have always been top-shelf components available to the hardcore, games like Gran Turismo 5 are encouraging more and more people to want a more and more realistic driving experience.

Click on through to see how we did. The wheel It wasn't that long ago that we reviewed the company's Turbo wheelusing the then recently released Forza 3 as an excuse.

That wheel was covered in real leather and, while Alcantara is actually an artificial product made to look and feel like suede, it delivers a far preferable feel to raw hide. Paired with a set of similarly fuzzy driving gloves it offers incredible grip but, gloves off, the sensation is soft and comfortable, absorbing your palm sweat without complaint -- and if your palms aren't sweating you're driving too slow. Getting the wheel out of the box and mounted somewhere is a bit of a process of cables and adapters and clamps, though the door is open for a variety of mounting possibilities.

fanatec porsche wheel calibration

Removable but integrated clamps will hold this to your desk, though we found even when attached very securely the wheel would tilt ever so slightly toward you. It only happens if you grab the wheel and pull, and the clamps never actually failed on us, but it is a little disconcerting at first. The composite flappy paddles are a bit more exotic and, if you're getting the feeling that configuring this wheel could be a very expensive endeavor, you're right.

Like buying a high-end German auto there's no shortage of accessories here, and you run the risk of driving the cost of this setup through the roof. The good news is you can just buy what you need and, when you finally get sponsored by a virtual race team, go crazy on accessories. The wheel itself has a bevy of buttons on the front, four buttons on each stalk next to thumbs, another two on the bottom stalk situated beneath a four-way rocker, and of course the shift paddles on the back.

It's the same basic layout as the Turbo S wheel but things feel a bit more solid here, more firm. A little higher-end.

Up on top are a further two buttons used for tuning, which we'll get into in a moment. Sadly there's no center button under the horn, though you're always welcome to make your own honking noises. Finally there's an Xbox Guide button on the base, needed if you're going to be connecting this wirelessly to Microsoft's console. Kindly the company has added an integrated headphone jack, which means you won't have to keep a separate controller around if you want some voice chat in Forza.

If you're connecting to the PS3 or PC you'll need to do it via wired USB, though there's an optional wireless connector that you can use -- once the company gets them back in stock. Oh, and the six-speed shifter we have mounted on some of the pictures? These pedals can connect directly to the wheel or go straight to the PC, so they're completely standalone.

They've been available from the company for a few years now but we're just getting our first taste. Their open construction makes them hugely customizable, with tweakable and replaceable springs plus moveable faces and, well, just look at them. They have a very light feel that's unlike the budget foot fodder found in most wheels but a heavy construction that sees them staying in place.

The biggest difference here from standard pedals is the load cell on the brake. Load cells don't read position like a potentiometer used in the pedals of most gaming setups, instead reading pressure, meaning the brake here feels and acts more like the real thing. There's even a rumbling force-feedback effect to simulate the pulsation of ABS, but sadly few games support it directly.

The experience Wheel out of the box, drivers installed on the PC, pedals on the floor, held firmly in place by their considerable heft 11lbsand everything connected to the PC, we started with iRacing.

Turn on the wheel and it spins around to do an internal calibration, and immediately an annoying little fan inside spins to life. It's not terribly grating, especially once you start hearing some engine noises, but it is noticeable.

Naturally a re-calibration was required for the game and, it must be said, for the driver. The wheel has a very different feel from the G27 we've been using of late, a bit more resistance and force feedback effect. Thankfully there is a suite of configurable parameters that can be changed on the wheel itself, things like total force feedback effect, the linearity of motion of the wheel, the number of degrees of rotation you'd like on offer up toand about a half-dozen other minutia.

Normally you'd tune these things within whatever game you're playing, but quite often games will be missing some tunable parameter that you crave. Gran Turismo 5for example, doesn't offer nearly the suite of wheel customization options that one might like. Thankfully you can adjust the wheel itself and save those settings into one of five slots. Then, as you go from Forza 3 to GT5 to LFS you can quickly load up the proper configuration before you're out of the pits.

For iRacing we found ourselves adding a little bit of what the company calls "drift," which actually uses the force feedback motors to help you turn the wheel faster. At maximum this allows you to go from lock to lock ridiculously quickly and impreciselybut just a few points of drift helped to counter-act the game's programmed resistance and gave the feel of a very over-boosted power steering setup.Comments 4 July In Hardware.

Fanatec revealed a new rim for their high end Clubsport Wheel base. An o fficially licensed r eplica of the steering wheel used in the race version of the Porsche RSR. With its automotive grade leather and carbon fibre finish the wheel looks just as good as the real deal. It features a rev light bar built into the rim.

Because this is a top of the line wheel rim, the price is somewhat higher than base rims in the Fanatec line-up. After having managed a few leagues, i decided to start a website that covered news and interesting topics within the Sim Racing scene.

Okay, thanks. After releasing two very promising upper-market wheels for PC sim racers and console players, Fanatec have added a budget option to their line of Porsche wheels by introducing the Porsche Carrera Wheel. How does the cheapest Fanatec wheel fare against its bigger brothers and the competition from Logitech and Thrustmaster?

Read the review to find out! Earlier Fanatec wheels such as the GT3-RS and the Turbo S came with spectacular features such as an Alcantara-leather rim or cross-compatibility to all major gaming platforms.

Compared to the other wheels, the Carrera Wheel lacks the wireless functionality, Xbox compatibility, expensive materials for the wheel rim and, most importantly the more sophisticated Force Feedback mechanics.

The wheel not just lacks two additional vibration motors but also relies on gear-driven Force Feedback instead of the ultra-smooth belt-driven FFB effects the GT3-RS and Turbo S have become famous for. The wheel follows the same base design as all Fanatec wheels, featuring the glorious Porsche badge and 14 buttons including a D-pad on the mm diameter wheel.

Those are pretty much the weakest link of the wheel though as the standard shifters are merely just a base to put on the optionally-available Clubsport shifter pads that are available in the Fanatec webshop. The shifters can be used without them of course but the base is rather small and nothing for sim racers with bigger hands.

The whole three-pedal unit is completely made of plastic, allowing absolutely no adjustments whatsoever. Given that the Carrera Wheel uses the same design as all Fanatec wheels, it comes with the same table clamp mechanism of course. The wheel comes with screw holes for installation on cockpits and wheel stands as well for those of you having a more sophisticated setup.

Back when I first reviewed the GT3 RS, the wheel came with almost no documentation whatsoever and 64bit drivers were in beta stadium at best. The Carrera Wheel comes with a very nice quick installation guide that leaves no question unanswered and Fanatec constantly updates their drivers on a regular basis, adding new features and improvements all the time. Same goes for firmwares as constant updates have given sim racers more and more settings to play with.

The firmware version installed on the Carrera Wheel allows to change Force Feedback strength, steering degree, deadzone, steering linearity and damper settings while driving thanks to the build-in display.

Fanatec ClubSport Porsche 918 RSR Steering Wheel

The wheel feels very durable while driving with no mechanical play or deadzone spoiling a great driving experience. While the missing vibration effects make the Force Feedback less detailed, the biggest difference is definitely the noise as the Carrera Wheel can in no shape or form be deemed as silent. Aside from PC simulations, the wheel can also be used on the Playstation 3, a simple button combination sends the wheel in PS3 mode.

It was almost perfect out of the box for Gran Turismo 5, only a bit of fiddling with the deadzone setting was needed to make it perfect. The pedal set is less of a joy to work with for obvious reasons. The Carrera Wheel has almost the same features and offers even more in some departments, most notably the rich quick-tuning options and the excellent Force Feedback.

While that may not be a fair comparison, one has to wonder while wheels that sell for considerable less money manage to offer much better pedals. Pedals are decent but not as good as Clubsports.Comments 14 June In Hardware. The last few days, the Fanatec Media team have been teasing us with picture posts, hinting that a new or updated Fanatec pedal set will be released soon. The clutch pedal and shifter would have been wated on me as I'll always us paddles if I can wean myself off automatic gears I like most things about the Carrera but think the official photos may be a bit flattering as it looks a bit cheaper and more plasticky in other photos I have seen.

Also, I think money has been saved compared to the other Fanatecs by using gearing not helical instead of belts. Has anyone got one of these yet??

Inside the PWTS housing are three motors: two for producing various vibration feedback effects, such as engine rumble, pavement bumps and brake lockup. The third motor is a large Mabuchi RStypically found in RC model applications, that drives the wheel via a Gates automotive-grade belt made in-part with carbon fiber. Fanatec says it went for a large, single FFB motor in order to reduce unwanted friction and resistance in the system. The drawback was higher heat levels from the single motor design, which they mitigated with some internal cooling fans and heat sinks that vent out of grates in the top of the wheel housing.

The decision to go with belt drive was driven by a desire to reduce noise levels and that grinding vibration common to all gear-drive systems as the gear teeth mate and de-mate. Back to the outside of the wheel. The buttons on the wheel are blended into the form of the wheel spokes — an innovative and discreet way to implement the Xbox control button layout.

The buttons are also not in the best ergonomic location for their use, and since they all feel the same, you have to look at them to use them correctly. But taken as a whole, the wheel is clearly a product that exudes the look and feel of quality.

Attaching straight out of the left and right flanks of the force feedback housing, the wires and their connectors seem highly vulnerable to impacts and side-swipes that could damage them in the blink of an eye.

It would seem to have been better to place the wire connectors at the forward end of the housing, or recess them underneath the unit, as Logitech has done with its Logitech G25 and Logitech G27 wheels. The wheel can be attached to a firm base in three ways: a "C-clamp" bracket with adjustable feet, a steel Clubsport Table Clamp available separately from Fanatec, and via four mounting bolt holes in the bottom of the wheel housing.

As a high-end or "boutique" racing controller, the PWTS was clearly designed for use with a wheel stand or sim cockpit in mind. Pressing a small button on the wheel activates a small LED screen at the top of the wheel hub.

Vibration feedback on the Fanatec wheel provides some environmental cues but also can be used to sense brake lockup, a very handy feature. Next up is the "Drift" mode driselectable at OFF,or Drift mode uses the internal motors to assist your inputs, making the car feel more responsive to wheel inputs. AbS determines the amount of brake pedal force before the in-pedal vibration feedback motor starts to run.

After the first time using the PWTS on the PC, returning to the Xbox resulted in a mis-calibrated wheel, about 15 degrees off-center. This resets the firmware calibration point. I completed my first race without any problem. For the second race, the wheel and pedals will randomly stop accepting any input, so the car will just drift straight forward and crash. After a few seconds, the wheel will start working again. I cannot complete any other race, because the wheel keeps on freezing up. What am I doing wrong?
